Directional Backhand (Cross / Line)

What it is

A directional backhand is simply choosing where your backhand shot goes:

  • Crosscourt → diagonally across the net

  • Down the line → straight along the sideline

Both use the same swing. The only real difference is contact point, body alignment, and timing.

When to use it

Use crosscourt when:

  • You want a safer shot

  • You’re under pressure

  • You want consistency in rallies

  • You’re pulled wide and need recovery time

Crosscourt gives you more court space and net clearance.

Use down the line when:

  • You want to change direction

  • Your opponent is out of position

  • You get a shorter ball

  • You want to attack

Down the line is riskier but more aggressive.

Who should use it

Beginners

  • Focus mostly on crosscourt

  • Build consistency first

  • Use down the line only on easy balls

Intermediate players

  • Learn to choose based on court position

  • Start mixing both directions in rallies

Advanced players

  • Use direction strategically

  • Control depth, pace, and disguise

Step-by-step execution

Crosscourt Backhand

1. Set up early
Turn shoulders and get sideways quickly.

2. Space the ball
Keep good distance from your body.

3. Contact slightly in front

  • Comfortable height

  • Slightly later than down-the-line contact

4. Swing low to high
Brush for topspin.

5. Finish across the body
Your swing naturally sends the ball crosscourt.

Down-the-Line Backhand

1. Prepare earlier than usual
You need more time for direction control.

2. Step into the shot
Transfer weight forward.

3. Contact earlier
Hit slightly more in front than crosscourt.

4. Keep shoulders aligned forward
Avoid pulling off the ball.

5. Finish toward target
Shorter, more direct follow-through.

Common mistakes

Crosscourt mistakes

  • Opening shoulders too early

  • Overhitting instead of using spin

  • Standing too close to the ball

Down-the-line mistakes

  • Contacting too late

  • Falling sideways instead of forward

  • Trying to hit too hard

Simple key reminders

  • Crosscourt = safer

  • Down the line = attack

  • Earlier contact → straighter shot

  • Later contact → crosscourt angle

  • Stay balanced and relaxed
